The mini-series Adolescence is quickly becoming a resounding success on Netflix. But what are the chances of there being a second season?
The British drama series Adolescence tells the devastating story of an unimaginable crime: 13-year-old Jamie Miller (Owen Cooper) is said to have stabbed a fellow student to death. Across four episodes, the series explores the background and impact of the crime over a period of 13 months.
With intense performances and captivating, seamless tracking shots, Adolescence captivates the audience – and went straight to number 1 on the Netflix charts. But is the success enough to renew for a second season? The chances are looking bad for now.
Will there be a second season of Adolescence?
At the moment, Netflix has not yet commissioned a sequel to Adolescence. As a rule, the streaming service waits for a series to perform within the first 91 days of its release before making a final decision on a renewal. However, since Adolescence was announced as a self-contained miniseries from the start, a second season is unlikely for the time being.
A second season is not completely out of the question. In the past, some miniseries have been extended by further seasons after great success. Netflix itself, for example, ordered sequels to the miniseries Beef and The Watcher.
With a 100 percent rating on Rotten Tomatoes and an IMDB rating of 8.4 points, critics and audiences are enthusiastic. In the upcoming awards season, Adolescence already has a good chance of winning some prizes. Whether Netflix and the series creators are interested in a sequel at all remains to be seen in the coming weeks and months.
What could a sequel to the Netflix hit Adolescence look like?
It is unlikely that a second season will continue the story of Jamie Miller. Although some questions remain unanswered and the audience is deprived of a final court ruling, the boy’s fate is sealed at the end with his announcement of a guilty plea. In the UK, children as young as 10 years old can be held criminally responsible, and murder carries a mandatory life sentence.
Stephen Graham, who plays Eddie Miller and co-wrote the series with Jack Thorne, also confirmed to Tudum that the story was brought to a conclusion as planned: “We knew we wanted to end it [in the children’s room]. We wanted the story to end where it began.”
However, a continuation with a second season in an anthology format, which focuses on a new murder case, is possible. Youth violence remains a major social problem in the UK, regularly making headlines. Under the title Adolescence, the series could continue to explore the influences and circumstances that turn children into killers in the future with self-contained seasons.
When could Adolescence season 2 start on Netflix?
Should Netflix decide to continue Adolescence and the two series creators find a suitable idea, season 2 could be on the air as early as 2026. The production of the series itself is not too elaborate. By way of comparison, each episode of the first season was shot over a period of one week – after extensive rehearsals.
