This film tip shows in a vivid and authentic way how a newspaper article became a global movement that stood up against an abusive system.
For decades, it was an open secret that successful film producer Harvey Weinstein used his position of power to abuse women. A few years ago, it became one of the biggest Hollywood scandals.
Maria Schrader’s gripping drama She Said shows how the global MeToo movement developed from the first courageous accusations and intensive research by two dedicated journalists.
Free TV premiere: She Said reveals the biggest Hollywood scandal in recent times
In 2017, an investigation by two journalists, Megan Twohey (Carey Mulligan) and Jodi Kantor (Zoe Kazan), leads to the uncovering of numerous cases of abuse, all of which point to the powerful film producer Harvey Weinstein. An open secret that is difficult to prove, because none of the women involved seems to want to talk about it. After months of research and interviews, the New York Times finally publishes the research, breaking the silence of Hollywood and sparking a global movement.
She Said: Every character is a real-life character and you can feel it
From the outside, you often wonder why victims of abuse didn’t go to the police sooner. She Said vividly shows how difficult that really is. To make matters worse, there is the huge machinery of a silent film industry that protects the perpetrator and exposes the traumatized victims to additional threats.
The research conducted by the unlikely duo of journalists is also captivatingly told. Mulligan and Kazan play two women who are passionate about their work and give everything to give these women back a piece of justice in an authentic and stirring way. It’s no coincidence that the two seem like they’re straight out of real life, as director Maria Schrader told us in an interview at the theatrical release:
These journalists have entrusted us to tell the private side of their lives, which they deliberately left out of the book. Their husbands, their homes. Jodie Kantor’s apartment was recreated in great detail. They opened their closets for us and we knew what they were wearing on which days.
The pressure of making the movie was mainly to do justice to all the characters, who are based on real people. The German director has already shown that she has a great deal of sensitivity for this in her Emmy-award-winning work Unorthodox. In She Said, she also manages the difficult balancing act of depicting true events in the medium of film.
