New on Netflix: a 9-hour sci-fi marathon with one of the darkest visions of the future

by Dennis

Netflix added one of the best science fiction series of recent times to its streaming service over the weekend. Get ready for four dark survival adventures.

Although Netflix often announces major launches several weeks or at least a few days in advance, it happens again and again that the streaming service surprisingly adds well-known titles to its program. This happened over the weekend: Suddenly, (almost) the entire The Hunger Games series was available.

In 2012, the film adaptation of Suzanne Collins’ novel of the same name was released in cinemas and developed into a pop-cultural phenomenon. The Hunger Games kicked off a wave of similar sci-fi adaptations that took us on a journey into dystopian future visions in the context of coming-of-age films.

The Hunger Games on Netflix: The first four parts of the sci-fi series in a streaming subscription

You can now stream all four parts of the main series on Netflix. So nothing stands in the way of your next sci-fi binge. A total of nine hours in the world of Panem await you. The films released on Netflix include:

  • The Hunger Games (Gary Ross, 2012)
  • The Hunger Games – Catching Fire (Francis Lawrence, 2013)
  • The Hunger Games – Mockingjay Part 1 (Francis Lawrence, 2014)
  • The Hunger Games – Mockingjay Part 2 (Francis Lawrence, 2015)

The story begins with Katniss Everdeen (Jennifer Lawrence), who volunteers as a tribute for the impoverished District 12 to save her sister’s life. From now on, she has to compete against 23 other tributes in the so-called Hunger Games. A brutal game of life and death that is broadcast live on television to remind people of their place in the dictatorial state of Panem.

The only film missing is the prequel The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes. However, that didn’t come to the cinema until the end of 2023. So it could still take a while before the movie ends up on Netflix with a subscription. Nevertheless, the arrival of the first four movies is unlikely to be a coincidence. Because the Panem story continues tomorrow.

The Tributes of Panem continue: a new book and a new movie are on their way to us

With The Hunger Games L. M. Daybreak, the next novel in Collins’s Hunger Games series, will be released tomorrow, March 18, 2025. Once again, it is a prequel set before the events of the main series around Katniss Everdeen. This time, we learn the backstory of Haymitch Abernathy.

Katniss’s future mentor had to live through the horrors of the Hunger Games himself when he was chosen as the male tribute from District 12 for the 50th edition of the cruel competition. We learn about all he has experienced in the story of Sunrise on the Reaping (the original title of the novel), which will also be released in cinemas on November 19, 2026.

The new Hunger Games film is being directed by Francis Lawrence, who has been in charge of the series for the studio Lionsgate since Catching Fire. It is not yet known who will play the young Haymitch Abernathy. In the first four films, Woody Harrelson, a seasoned Hollywood star, took on the role.
