Hope seemed lost already. However, it now looks like the new Looney Tunes movie Coyote vs. Acme might still be released in theaters. We’ll bring you up to date.
We live in a time when studios are simply scrapping films that have already been made in order to obtain tax write-offs worth millions. In recent years, Warner Bros. Discovery caused a stir with two titles in particular that disappeared from release schedules overnight: Batgirl and Coyote vs. Acme.
At least for the latest adventure from the Looney Tunes universe, there is now a glimmer of hope on the horizon again. After it recently looked as if we would never see Coyote vs. Acme, the film directed by Chris McKay (The Lego Batman Movie) is fighting its way back into the spotlight.
Coyote vs. Acme: A 50-million-dollar deal could decide the future of the Looney Tunes spin-off
As the industry magazine Deadline has exclusively learned, Ketchup Entertainment is in negotiations with Warner to secure all rights to Coyote vs. Acme. The mix of live-action and animation could change studios for $50 million.
This isn’t the first time that Ketchup Entertainment has saved a Looney Tunes film from certain death. The 2024 film A Sticky Adventure: Daffy Duck and Porky Pig Save the Planet almost never would have seen the light of day if Warner’s business decisions had had their way.
The deal is not yet finalized. Warner has so far demanded at least $75 to $80 million for Coyote vs. Acme. This sum was justified by the film’s production costs: the offshoot about the unlucky coyote Wile E. Coyote is said to have cost $70 million to produce.
Rescue mission for Coyote vs. Acme: When would the Looney Tunes movie open in theaters if successful?
If the deal goes through, Coyote vs. Acme could premiere sometime in 2026 – about three years after its original theatrical release. Let’s hope the rescue mission is successful so that we can see the movie for ourselves. The cast alone, with John Cena (Peacemaker), Will Forte (The Last Man on Earth) and Lana Condor (To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before), sounds promising.
It would be a tragedy if the latest film from one of Hollywood’s oldest franchises is never released. Since 1930, the Looney Tunes have been delighting young and old alike. A year later, the animated series Merrie Melodies was added, in which numerous Looney Tunes characters made an appearance. So we’re talking about a cornerstone of pop culture that generations of children have grown up with.
