Seth Rogen plays film producer Matt Remick, who receives a surprise promotion when his boss has to vacate her post. In his new role as head of the Hollywood studio Continental Studios, he now has to deal with competing producers, small and large-scale disasters on film sets, and the fragile egos of acting stars and directing legends. The problem: hardly anyone really takes the idealistic and often nervous studio head seriously.
Matt loves movies, but in order to make his studio profitable in the crisis-ridden entertainment industry, he walks a fine line between art and commerce. Specifically, if he has to produce a movie about the Kool-Aid drink, why not get a great director like Martin Scorsese on board? Matt’s projects, however, usually end in chaos and in this case with the master director’s bitter tears.
What is the big attraction of The Studio?
Seth Rogen probably went through everyone in his phone to cast his new comedy series. In addition to regular supporting actors like Kathryn Hahn as a rowdy marketing executive, Ike Barinholtz as Matt’s producer colleague, and Catherine O’Hara as a fidgety indie producer, the series features a cameo parade that’s enough to give you whiplash.
From Hollywood stars like Zac Efron and Anthony Mackie to directing maestros like Ron Howard and Zack Snyder, there are numerous new surprising appearances to marvel at in each of the 10 episodes. But what use is the greatest cameo fireworks display if the rest is not convincing? Fortunately, the 40 (!) guest appearances are just the icing on the cake of this biting and brilliant comedy series.
Above all, the staging stands out. With a crackly film look, directing duo Rogen and Goldberg capture each episode in long, uninterrupted sequences. This creates an almost manic energy that leads directly through the escalating chaos. In the episodic format, (almost) every episode highlights a new crisis that Matt has to overcome – or even triggers himself.

Will The Studio be a box office success or a flop?
The film industry’s existential crisis is actually sad to watch, but unfortunately pretty damn funny in The Studio. Film fans who are familiar with pop culture and Hollywood’s crises will particularly enjoy the numerous references and insider jokes. But don’t worry, the comedy series is also great fun if you don’t know the movie industry – or have never heard the name Matt Belloni.
When the studio team manipulates, insults or simply runs around screaming in panic, directors Rogen and Goldberg demonstrate their comedy expertise. Not infrequently, drug and cringe humor meet the stress level of The Black Diamond and The Bear.
There is one small criticism, however: the episodes, each around 30 minutes long, are built around a specific core conflict or gag that escalates from minute to minute. Unfortunately, this concept does not work in all cases and ensures that less striking jokes are unnecessarily and tiresomely drawn out.
Above all, The Studio is an extremely entertaining Hollywood satire that carries passion and love for film as well as frustration about the absurd changes in the dream factory at its heart – and is a visually stunning highlight that we rarely get to see in the series genre.
