Who’s in the cast and who’s behind the film?
It is doubtful whether Keanu Reeves will return as Neo and Carrie-Anne Moss as Trinity. Filmmaker Drew Goddard (Cabin in the Woods) wants to take a completely different approach, as it was announced by Warner, according to Deadline:
Drew [Goddard] came to Warner with a new idea that we all think is an incredible way to continue the Matrix world, honoring what Lana and Lilly [Wachowskis] started over 25 years ago while offering a unique perspective based on his own love for the series and characters.
This brings us to the biggest change for the cyberpunk franchise: Lana and Lilly Wachowski, the creators of the Matrix, are no longer in charge and will not be taking a seat in the director’s chair. Lana will serve only as executive producer. The sisters worked together on the first Matrix film over 20 years ago:

Keanu Reeves admitted in a 2021 interview with Empire that he would come back under one condition: if Lana Wachowski asks him. However, since she only has an EP credit, his involvement is likely a non-starter.
In January 2025, Will Smith attracted attention with a cryptic Instagram video that suggested he would be starring in Matrix 5. Fans found this conclusive because he was originally intended for the Neo role. It later turned out that he had only shot a Matrix music video.
What is the plot of Matrix 5?
So far, nothing is known about Goddard’s “fresh approach”. Of course, the story of another Neo anomaly in a different guise could always be told. And a continuation of the central theme of free choice vs. control is also conceivable.
