A third season is certain for the Game of Thrones prequel House of the Dragon. But when is it coming and what do we already know about the next chapter of the fantasy series?

That much was already clear in June 2024, as Deadline reported at the time. After the end of the second season, it was also announced in August that there would be an additional fourth and final season.

When does House of the Dragon season 3 start?
The third season of House of the Dragon does not yet have an official start date. There were two whole years between seasons 1 and 2, which had less to do with the Hollywood strike of 2023, which caused delays in many productions. Most of the people involved are in British labor unions. A production move and the increased use of CGI (for dragons, for example) had more to do with the long wait.
HotD season 3 is not expected before 2026. Since December 2024, however, we at least know when filming will start. According to showrunner Ryan Condal, it is scheduled for January to fall 2025. He promised: “This will be the best season yet!”
According to fan reports, however, filming did not start until March. Whether this will delay filming until winter 2025 can only be speculated.
In February 2025, House of the Dragon stars Matt Smith and Fabien Frankel aka Daemon and Ser Criston revealed at the MEGACON in Orlando that they had already received and read scripts up to Season 3, Episode 6 (via ScreenRant ).
Where can you watch Season 3 of House of the Dragon in Germany?
Like Game of Thrones and the first seasons of House of the Dragon, Season 3 is at home on the German offshoot of Sky and its streaming service WOW. This applies to most of the US pay-TV channel HBO’s own productions.
What happens in House of the Dragon and what is the book template for Season 3?
While Game of Thrones is based on several books by fantasy author George R.R. Martin, the entire House of the Dragon series is based on just one book: A Game of Thrones. In it, Martin describes the historical events that took place 200 years before the mother series from the perspective of various Maesters. This refers to the war between the blacks and the greens from the House of Targaryen.
As long as the series sticks to the book, the next four battles in the so-called Dragon Dance are coming up. The first of these will be the so-called Battle of the Gurgle at the beginning of Season 3. And of course, a lot of characters will bite the dust again until it turns out whether team green or team black will triumph in the central Targaryen conflict.

Who is responsible for the new season of HotD?
Ryan Condal is and remains the showrunner, having created the series with original writer George R.R. Martin. Of the 18 episodes in the first two seasons, he has co-written six himself. It is not yet known who else will be part of his writing team or who will take their place on the director’s throne.
Template author George R.R.Martin is also creatively involved in the series as co-creator and producer, but, unlike the showrunner, does not have the final say. After season 2, he had a lot of criticism of season 2 of House of the Dragon on his personal blog. In November 2024, HBO CEO Casey Bloys compared the situation to a “rocky marriage.”
Are there already pictures or a trailer for House of the Dragon season 3?
No, the season 2 finale of House of the Dragon just wrapped in August 2024. It will be some time before we see any material from season 3.
More spin-offs from the fantasy world of Westeros
The series A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms will be released in 2025, before new episodes of House of the Dragon. The spin-off is based on George R.R. Martin’s Hedge Knight novella and takes place about 100 years before Game of Thrones. More spin-offs are also planned.
Most recently, in October 2024, there was even talk of a Game of Thrones movie, which is now being developed for the future of the fantasy franchise. A month later, it was confirmed that the Warner Bros. project is indeed in development.
