Season 2 of the HBO series is based on the video game The Last of Us Part II* , which will provide the template for the upcoming seasons. So if you want to experience how the mushroom zombie end times continue, you need a PlayStation 4 or 5, or a PC for the remastered version of the game.

Will The Last of Us Season 2 differ from The Last of Us Part II?
As in season 1, there will be some differences to the game template, which the showrunner developed together with game creator Neil Druckmann. We could already see in the last trailer for season 2 that the spurs from the game will finally make their debut.
In a screen-rant interview with fans at the 2025 SXSW festival, showrunner Craig Mazin prepared them for the fact that they should expect some deviations again: “We won’t always do the things you think we’ll do. Sometimes we do the things you thought we’d do in a different way or at a different time. All I can say is: if you trust us, you’ll be happy at the end of the season.”
Currently, HBO is talking about four seasons for The Last of Us, which means that it will probably take three seasons to implement the story from the second Naughty Dog video game. So anyone who plays the game or watches a playthrough can already see several years into the future of the series.
