House of the Dragon season 3 has begun production and unveils the first new additions to the upcoming episodes. Among them is a Sons of Anarchy star in a key role.
House of the Dragon season 2 is still fresh in the minds of Game of Thrones fans. While the much-heralded battle in the previous episodes failed to materialize, to the disappointment of many, we can finally expect it in the third season of the fantasy series.
The series celebrated the start of filming the new episodes with a first video that brings back a familiar face. In addition, there is the casting announcement of a new key role.
Filming of House of the Dragon Season 3 Begins: First Video Brings Back Emma D’Arcy as Rhaenyra
principal photography of the third season of House of the Dragon has officially begun, as HBO announced via a first set video on X (formerly Twitter). The video shows Emma D’Arcy as Rhaenyra Targaryen, who is shooting the first scene of the new episodes. The following words can be read: “The fight for the throne is far from over.”

Filming is expected to continue until October 2025. This will be followed by extensive post-production. Therefore, the new season is not expected to start before 2026.
Sons of Anarchy and Gladiator star Tommy Flanagan joins House of the Dragon season 3
As Deadline also reports, Tommy Flanagan will join House of the Dragon season 3 as a new cast member in a “key role”. The actor, known for his roles in Sons of Anarchy, Gladiator, Braveheart and Guardians of the Galaxy, among others, will play the role of Ser Roderick Dustin.
Dustin, also known as “Roddy the Ruin,” is a hard-nosed northern warlord who leads a large band of war veterans called the Winter Wolves. He will support Rhaenyra in the Dance of the Dragons.
Flanagan’s casting comes shortly after James Norton (McMafia, Nowhere Special) was confirmed for the role of Ormund Hightower. In George R.R. Martin’s novel A Game of Thrones, the two new additions ultimately face each other on different sides of the battlefield.
