With the new edition of the Chronicles of Narnia series, Netflix is launching the streaming service’s biggest fantasy project to date. While the first two films are to be directed by Barbie director Greta Gerwig, the series is currently being discussed with six further films – at least the first of which will be released in IMAX for a one-time run, making Netflix history.
As exciting as the exploitation of the fantasy hit already is, the cast has also been a topic of conversation for several weeks. After a James Bond star and one of the biggest pop stars of our time have already been mentioned for the streaming blockbuster, an absolute Hollywood icon is now also said to be on the shortlist.
Meryl Streep is to become Lion Aslan in the Narnia remake by Netflix
As Nexus Point News, whose scoops have often proven to be accurate, reports, Meryl Streep is said to have been considered for the Narnia remake. But she is not supposed to play the witch Jadis, but to lend her voice to Lion Aslan.
Aslan plays an integral role in the fantasy novels by C.S. Lewis as the true king of Narnia, who guides the Pevensie siblings through their fight against the White Witch. But that’s not all: as can be read in the prequel The Miracle of Narnia, Aslan is actually the creator of the fantastic world and brings the dreary land to life with his song.
It is precisely this prequel that Greta Gerwig’s first Narnia film for Netflix is supposed to address – a story that has never before made it to the big screen. In it, young Digory and his best friend Polly find themselves in several fantasy worlds at once, thanks to his shady uncle Andrew’s bonds. There they not only meet Aslan, but also the evil witch Jadis.
While James Bond star Daniel Craig is currently being considered for the role of Uncle Andrew, pop singer Charli xcx is said to have been offered the role of Jadis. However, this has not yet been confirmed, nor has Steep’s casting.
The latter would be nothing less than an absolute coup, giving the fantasy film adaptation by Aslan a thrilling update through gender swapping – and adding even more star power. When is the new Narnia movie coming to Netflix?
The Narnia remake from Netflix is scheduled to begin shooting in the summer of 2025 and will be released in numerous IMAX theaters worldwide on Thanksgiving 2026 for an exclusive two-week run.
