50 million flop: After the Hellboy disaster, the next reboot of the fantasy series is already planned
Hellboy had already been filmed twice before this installment. In Hellboy and Hellboy II – The Golden Army, Ron Perlman played the demon with the stone hand. These two parts were more successful than the reboot and won over more viewers and critics alike. In contrast, very few people were convinced by the reboot with Stranger Things star David Harbour. Many fans would have preferred a sequel from Guillermo del Toro.
On Moviepilot, the first two Hellboy films have a solid rating of 6.7 and 6.6, whereas the reboot scores a bitter 5.2 out of 10. The film was also a flop at the box office: it cost 50 million to make and only grossed 55 million. To be considered profitable after deducting the production budget, marketing costs and the like, it would have had to bring in a lot more.
