For fans of the cult film “Top Gun”, the long wait is finally over: After more than three decades, the sequel to the film is coming to cinemas! Of course, Tom Cruise is back in the leading role as fighter pilot Maverick. The second trailer already gives an impression of the daring flight manoeuvres we can expect from summer 2022. “Top Gun: Maverick” – Storyline
Pete Mitchell (Tom Cruise) is still a fixture in the military despite increasing age. As an instructor, he teaches junior pilots everything they need to know to keep a cool head during dangerous manoeuvres. But the competition among pilots is not the only one: the increasing drone technology could soon replace combat pilots.
But before that happens, Mitchell trains a new team that has to prepare for a special mission. Among them is recruit Bradley Bradshaw (Miles Teller), son of the late Nick “Goose” Bradshaw. The young pilot evokes old memories in Mitchell and challenges him to face his fears. Can he face the demons of the past and still juggle his job as a pilot and instructor?
“Top Gun: Maverick” – Background and Cast
As expected, Tom Cruise, who rose to stardom with “Top Gun” in the mid-80s, returns as the titular Maverick for the sequel. He was last seen in cinemas in 2018 in the sixth film of the “Mission Impossible” series. Also returning will be Val Kilmer as Maverick’s former rival Tom “Iceman” Kazanski. In other roles we see Jennifer Connely (“Alita: Battle Angel”), Ed Harris (“Mother!”) and Miles Teller (“War Dogs”).
Joseph Kosinski, responsible for “Oblivion” and most recently “No Way Out”, could be won for the directing post. Behind the camera there will be a reunion with old acquaintances: Jerry Bruckheimer will be working as a producer again a good thirty years after Part 1 and we can also look forward to Harold Faltermeyer’s music in “Top Gun 2. “

“Top Gun: Maverick” – Theatrical Release
The rumour mill surrounding the sequel to the cult film has been bubbling at times more and at times less in the past, but since 2017 at the latest, fans can be absolutely certain that part 2 is coming. Nevertheless, the original date for 2019 was postponed once again by a whole year, as the actors needed even more time for flying lessons (via GQ). The corona pandemic also played its part in the delayed start. After several postponements, the final launch date for “Top Gun: Maverick” is now set for 26 May 2022.
