The Wonder Trailer: Florence Pugh Leads Netflix’s Latest Period Drama

Netflix has released the official trailer for The Wonder, the upcoming film adaptation of author Emma Donoghue’s psychological thriller novel of the same name. It is currently slated to arrive in select theaters on November 2, followed by its streaming debut on November 16.

The Wonder trailer features Oscar nominee Florence Pugh as a nurse who gets enlisted to go to a small village to watch over a so-called miracle phenomenon involving a young girl who hasn’t eaten anything for four months.

“1862, 13 years after the Great Famine,” reads the synopsis. “An English Nightingale Nurse Lib Wright is called to the Irish Midlands by a devout community to conduct a 15-day examination over one of their own. Anna O’Donnell is an 11-year-old girl who claims not to have eaten for four months, surviving miraculously on ‘manna from heaven.’ As Anna’s health rapidly deteriorates, Lib is determined to unearth the truth, challenging the faith of a community that would prefer to stay believing.”

The Wonder is directed by Sebastián Lelio (Gloria Bell) from a script he co-wrote with Donoghue and Alice Birch (Normal People). It stars Florence Pugh, Kíla Lord Cassidy, Toby Jones, Niamh Algar, Elaine Cassidy, Ciarán Hinds, Tom Burke, Dermot Crowley, Brían F. O’Byrne, and David Wilmot. The film is a production by House Production and Element with Ed Guiney and Tessa Ross.

This marks the second time that one of Donoghue’s novels is getting a movie treatment, with the first one being Lenny Abrahamson’s acclaimed 2015 drama, Room, which earned the author an Oscar nomination for Best Adapted Screenplay.
