The best sci-fi series of the millennium: an ingenious space saga that gets even better and more complex with every season

Sci-fi fans who have missed out on the space epic The Expanse should urgently catch up. You can stream the 6-season masterpiece on Amazon Prime Video

The Moviepilot editorial team has chosen the 50 best sci-fi series since 2000. The space epic The Expanse landed in first place in the ranking and was able to prevail against (also) fantastic hits such as Westworld, Doctor Who or Rick and Morty.

All 6 seasons with a total of 62 episodes of concentrated sci-fi entertainment are available to stream on Amazon Prime Video *. But what makes The Expanse the perfect sci-fi entertainment?

On Amazon: The Expanse is a massive science fiction epic

An adaptation of the first six books in the nine-part series of novels by James S.A. Corey (actually Daniel Abraham and Ty Franck), The Expanse tells of the political and human conflicts in the solar system. In the 24th century, humanity has long since spread beyond Earth.

But relations between the people of Earth, the Martian military and the Belters from the asteroid belt near Mars and Jupiter are tense – to put it mildly. In the middle of it all is the crew of the small spaceship Rocinante, made up of people from a wide variety of backgrounds.

What makes the story of The Expanse so special is its changeability. Power games and conspiracies involving politics, the military, activists and extremists are always the driving force, but with each season the genre range within the sci-fi framework expands. Sometimes The Expanse is a space thriller, sometimes a conspiracy thriller or pure survival horror in space. Major alien myths are also included.

At the heart of the series, however, are the characters, whose decisions can have devastating consequences many episodes later. So you can expect a story that builds steadily over the years, becoming increasingly complex and engaging over the course of 62 episodes. The Expanse is never monotonous.
