On Netflix you can watch an extremely dark and gripping thriller drama whose shocking story is based on a true story
Twilful companies that pollute the environment with their toxic waste have long established themselves as effective antagonists. The incredible wealth and widespread facelessness of such companies make them a formidable threat. But what if this story is not pure fiction?
In Poisoned Truth, director Todd Haynes tells the story of lawyer Robert Bilott. He risked his career for years to uncover the truth about the chemical company DuPont. The film was unjustly lost in the cinemas, although it was initially thought to have a chance of winning an Oscar.
Poisoned Truth with Mark Ruffalo (known as the Hulk from numerous Marvel films) can now be streamed on Netflix
Thriller recommendation on Netflix: In Poisoned Truth, Mark Ruffalo takes on a major chemical company
Robert Bilott (Mark Ruffalo) has made it. After years of trying, he is finally a partner in his law firm in Cincinnati. As a corporate lawyer, he represents chemical companies, which is why he is not very interested in the case of Wilbur Tennant (Bill Camp). The farmer has lost his 190 cows to a strange disease and sees a connection to the DuPont corporation. The latter has bought the neighboring property and is said to have poisoned the water there with waste.
Here you can watch the trailer for Poisoned Truth:
The case doesn’t let Bilott go, however, and he starts his own investigation. When he travels to West Virginia himself to see what’s going on, he slowly begins to believe Wilbur. He finds out that DuPont is using chemicals that have toxic effects and that the company needs to dispose of its toxic waste.
Despite the clear facts, the case wears on the protagonist – and makes him angrier
It is clear from the start that the chemical company is poisoning the drinking water in the area. But the lawyer’s real task is to gather and present evidence in order to hold the chemical giant to account. And that turns out to be extremely difficult. After all, Bilott is up against an entire system that is increasingly allied against him.
Thanks to Ruffalo’s acting performance, you can feel him and his relationship with his wife Sarah (Anne Hathaway) slowly crumbling under this Herculean task. And the more trouble he gets into, the more you wonder how you can fight such an unjust system in the first place.
