For anyone who isn’t in the mood for the European Football Championship, we recommend streaming a wonderfully nostalgic fantasy adventure that you’re probably all familiar with
An island with two mountains? That can only be Lummerland! That’s right: today you can watch Jim Button and Luke the Engine Driver in the stream, as a charming live-action adaptation that lovingly and heartily catapults the 64-year-old material into the present day.
This is what Jim Button and Luke the Engine Driver is all about
On the island with two mountains called Lummerland, all is still well with the world. Things are correspondingly tranquil there. But the problems don’t stop at the island. Because the island is said to be too small for all its inhabitants, the once stranded orphan Jim Button (Solomon Gordon) and Luke the Engine Driver (Henning Baum) set off with Emma the engine to explore the wide world.
In the process, they come across the strangest creatures such as the illusory giant Mr. Tur Tur or the half-dragon Nepomuk. Ultimately, however, the two main characters embark on an adventurous and turbulent search for the missing Princess Li Si, who is being held captive in the Dragon City.
Jim Button and Luke the Engine Driver is based on a children’s book, but is suitable for all ages
Jim Button and Luke the Engine Driver is based on the extremely successful and well-known children’s book by Michael Ende of the same name from 1960. Surprisingly, this is the first live-action adaptation of the story, although the film was only released in German cinemas in 2018. Before that, there were the well-known adaptations by the Augsburger Puppenkiste as a series and an animated series from 1999.
Anyone familiar with the original is likely to get one nostalgic shiver after another down their spine and feel at home with this film adaptation right from the start. Anyone who has never heard of Jim Button and Luke the engine driver will be doubly pleased: You have a truly imaginative, heart-warming adventure journey full of dazzling, lovingly staged characters ahead of you.
