The Lord of the Rings series elevates a minor character from season 1 to the main character in season 2 to take on Sauron in Galadriel’s place … or be driven mad.
The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power returns to Amazon Prime * in two months. Everything we already know about season 2 suggests that the reunion will be darker than before. At the same time, the cast of characters is being revamped, which also means that previous supporting characters will suddenly become main characters
The Rings of Power elevates Lord of the Rings blacksmith Celebrimbor to the main character in season 2
In the latest issue of Totalfilm, the two Lord of the Rings showrunners Patrick McKay and J.D. Payne have spilled the beans on season 2 of their great fantasy series. In addition to dark father-son conflicts in the dwarf kingdom and a season that “belongs entirely to the villains”, they are also putting the spotlight on a new main character who only made brief appearances in 5 of the 8 episodes in season 1: ringsmith Celebrimbor (Charles Edwards).
While the conflict between good and evil takes on a new scale, it also becomes more intimate this season: the central relationship of the season is probably the one between Sauron and Celebrimbor, which is all about temptation, manipulation and corruption. It’s a descent into madness. So alongside epic action, dark sorcery and the hordes of evil, it also gets more personal and psychological.
The Lord of the Rings showrunners even go so far as to describe Celebrimbor as the “main protagonist” of season 2, rising from a previously minor supporting character to greater importance.
On a plot level, this makes a lot of sense for the Lord of the Rings series: after all, season 2 revolves around the further forging of the 20 rings of power to advance Sauron’s rise. And for this, Halbrand aka Sauron aka Annatar (Charlie Vickers) needs the talented elvish blacksmith from Eregion, who was already happy to be flattered in season 1. The first trailer already showed him blinded by a radiant light (Sauron’s altered form?). After Galadriel, Sauron has apparently chosen a new dance partner
