The next big fantasy craze could soon be upon us. The popular video game Elden Ring is being considered for a film adaptation, according to its creators
Fantasy luminary George R.R. Martin not only created the world of Game of Thrones and House of the Dragon, he is also involved in another story that has taken the video game world by storm in recent years.
We’re talking about Elden Ring, the popular fantasy RPG that was released in 2022 and has already sold 25 million copies. According to the developer studio, fans can now hope for a film adaptation of the popular material
Elden Ring maker holds out prospect of fantasy film adaptation
Elden Ring was created by Japanese development studio From Software in collaboration with George R.R. Martin. Studio president Hidetaka Miyazaki, who directed the game, told The Guardian (via VGC ) that interest in a film adaptation has already been expressed:
I see no reason to be opposed to an alternative interpretation of Elden Ring, a movie for example. But I don’t think I or From Software have the knowledge or skills to produce something like that in another medium. So there would have to be a strong partner

At the same time, however, Miyazaki would not relinquish the popular fantasy world lightly for a film adaptation:
We’d have to build a lot of trust and agreement on what we want to do with it, but there’s definitely interest.

In Elden Ring, players take on the role of a so-called Tainted, whose ancestors have been exiled from the Intermediate Land. When the Elden Ring is destroyed, they are given the opportunity to reclaim the realm from which they were once cast out.
Just last Friday, June 21, 2024, Shadow of the Erdtree was released as an expansion to the popular game. Even though Miyazaki has so far ruled out other expansions, he is said to have left the door open for a possible sequel. There would therefore be a huge fantasy world to explore here, which would provide plenty of material for several films (or series)
