New on Amazon Prime: Exciting and ingenious gangster thriller for all Guy Ritchie fans

by Tommy

There’s a little gangster gem hiding on Amazon Prime right now, just waiting for you to steal it in the company of a great cast

The glitter and flash of gemstones, the shimmer of abstract statues. They are all tempting to reach out and take something. It gets even more exciting when there is a lot at stake and entire burglaries, including escape plans and false identities, have to be planned. Gangter and Heist fans are at home here.

Equally familiar to all these fans will be Lying and Stealing, in which Theo James and Emily Ratajkowski build a future for themselves as a mismatched gangster couple. In the process, they have to overcome a number of obstacles and perhaps even put their own lives on the line. You can currently stream the resulting thriller on Amazon Prime.

In Lying and Stealing on Amazon Prime, an art thief desperately tries to finally pay off his debt

One last job. These are the famous last words that have been the undoing of a number of people who turn gangster against their will. Unfortunately, the same applies to Ivan (James), who steals art objects for “the Greek” Dimitri (Fred Melamed) because of an unpaid bill from his father.

It’s supposed to be simple. One last job, collect one last work of art, then his debts will be forgiven and he can start a normal life. But of course it’s anything but easy. Not least because Ivan has now attracted the attention of the FBI and at the same time has to look after his socially maladjusted brother Ray (Ebon Moss-Bachrach).

His unexpected last hope is Elyse (ERatajkowski), who keeps her head above water with whatever she can get and actually dreams of a big acting career. Together they hatch a plan to finally make a fresh start.

On Amazon Prime Lying and Stealing is a suspenseful thriller for Heist fans that comes to a head right to the end

Lying and Stealing takes us, as silent, long-fingered observers, into the world of the rich, the beautiful and the very easy to believe. It all looks insanely good and all the theft scenes are so hard-boiled and cool that you are immediately sucked in with fascination.

Theo James in particular does a masterful job as a likeable, approachable but driven protagonist. Lying and Stealing almost seems like his warm-up exercise for his role in Guy Ritchie’s brilliant gangster series The Gentlemen.

A supporting actor highlight is Ebon Moss-Bachrach, who is currently thrilling as Richie in The Bear: King of the Kitchen and regularly steals the show from his co-stars in his non-conformist but lovable manner.

Much here is reminiscent of the casual light-footedness of Guy Ritchie or Steven Soderbergh (Ocean’s Eleven) and will enthral fans of both. But underneath the chic façade is a thriller drama that turns bitterly serious in its finale and gets our pulses racing in the best possible way. Including an absolutely hateable antagonist
