But it’s not just the tiger named Richard Parker that the director brings to life in spectacular fashion.
Life of Pi guarantees a movie night that will leave everyone’s mouths open and eyes watering. Disney+ offers a subscription to the film, which also made it into our Moviepilot Top 100 best films of the last decade.
This is what the adventure masterpiece Life of Pi is about at Disney+
In the story of Ang Lee’s film, which is based on the novel Shipwreck with Tiger by Yann Martel, a writer (Rafe Spall) is looking for an extraordinary story for his new book. In Montreal, he comes across the Indian-born Pi, who tells him about an incredible adventure
At the age of 17, Pi (Suraj Sharma) is supposed to emigrate from India to Canada with his family. On board the ship are most of the zoo animals owned by his family, which are to be sold in America. After a heavy storm, only Pi and some of the animals make it onto a lifeboat. Thus begins a struggle for survival that lasts over 200 days.
Life of Pi touches the heart and has overwhelming images
When Ang Lee’s film was released in 2012, the 3D hype following James Cameron’s Avatar was still pretty fresh. In addition to the many films that were subsequently converted to 3D and were rather painful on the eyes, Life of Pi benefited greatly from the effect and made the movie experience even more impressive.
But even when streamed on Disney+, where the film’s 3D effect is lost, Ang Lee’s blockbuster remains an impressive spectacle. The award for Best Visual Effects at the 2013 Oscars is particularly noticeable in the scenes in which the main character interacts with the animated animals or encounters the wonders of nature.
Here you can watch the making-of to the amazing images of Life of Pi:
The portrayal of the tiger Richard Parker in particular is unique and seems so real in almost every scene as if it had been filmed with a real animal. Scenes in which the lifeboat is suddenly stormed by a school of flying fish, a glowing whale or a floating island full of meerkats also make Life of Pi a visual treat.
Ang Lee has not simply created a demonstration of impressive technical possibilities with his film. Life of Pi is also an extremely moving drama in narrative terms, in which the main character’s struggle for survival is elevated to a modern fairy tale. Without being overly religious, the blockbuster is also about how the power of faith can create the most incredible stories.
