Catastrophic sci-fi flop conquers Netflix charts: 6 years ago, it almost destroyed a cult series

A sci-fi movie that was an extreme box office flop is currently near the top of the Netflix charts. After that, the legendary series had to recover with a complete reorientation.

The first Predator movie from 1987 is one of the best Arnold Schwarzenegger movies ever. The fight for survival against a particularly dangerous attacker from space has given rise to a franchise of several films. The artistic and commercial low point probably came with Predator – Upgrade in 2018.

The sci-fi blockbuster from Kiss Kiss, Bang Bang director Shane Black flopped so hard that the series had to be completely reoriented afterwards. Nevertheless, the movie has made it to number 2 in the movie charts on Netflix, where the film has recently become available in the streaming flat rate.

Now on Netflix: Predator – Upgrade went under at the box office and severely damaged the franchise

In the film’s story, Predators return to Earth in their most powerful form yet, because of a young boy (Jacob Tremblay). A group of former soldiers therefore join forces to protect humanity once more from the extraterrestrial threat.

Since Predator – Upgrade focuses heavily on family history in an American suburb, Black’s contribution apparently reached the target audience much more difficultly.

With a budget of $88 million, the sci-fi film only grossed $160 million worldwide, according to Box Office Mojo, which is far too little money. The reviews of Predator – Upgrade were not exactly positive either. At the review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes, the blockbuster gets a low average rating of 34 percent.

After Predator – Upgrade, you can stream the better part afterwards with a subscription to Disney+

To breathe new life into the science fiction franchise, the prequel Prey was made after the failed Predator – Upgrade. The film by 10 Cloverfield Lane director Dan Trachtenberg is set in the 18th century and sheds light on the Predator threat from the perspective of the Native American Comanche people.
