In anticipation of season 3, the creators of Amazon’s fantasy series The Rings of Power are already making ominous promises for a beloved Lord of the Rings character.
Although Amazon has not yet officially announced the third season of the great fantasy series, the series creators are already working diligently in the background on the continuation of The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power. The Ring team is currently writing the scripts for the new episodes – and has already hinted that they will do a fan favorite a disservice: Elrond (Robert Aramayo) is in for a rough time.
Gloomy prospects for Elrond in season 3 of The Rings of Power
Elrond has been one of the most popular characters in the Lord of the Rings series since season 1. With his overall demeanor and his friendship with dwarf Durin IV (Owain Arthur), he brings some hope into the threatening events of Middle-earth. However, his character could change a lot from season 3 onwards, as series creators Patrick McKay and John D. Payne revealed in an interview with Rings and Realms :
We cast him [Robert Aramayo] to play the most optimistic character on the show. When we talked to him about it, he asked, ‘Why? I love The Lord of the Rings, but I don’t understand that.’ But it was like we were sending him on a journey: We’re going to break him, because this is Elrond’s story. The blows will come and come and never really stop.
Of course, the Lord of the Rings guides don’t reveal exactly what that means for Season 3 of The Rings of Power. But fans can already speculate about what’s to come with these hints.
What does Elrond expect in the third season of the Lord of the Rings series?
Anyone who only knows the character Elrond from the series and Peter Jackson’s films probably doesn’t know that Elrond has a very eventful life in Tolkien. Here are three possible dark points of reference for the further history of the elf:
Season 3 could pick up on the controversial kiss between Elrond and Galadriel (as invented by the series) to ensure broken hearts when Galadriel’s husband Celeborn inevitably returns.
After the Dwarf prince sent his promised help in the Battle of Eregion too late (“Durin will come,” Elrond insisted to the last), this could give the
heartwarming friendship of Durin and Elrond cracks – especially since it is not yet clear in which direction the dangerous Dwarf rings will drive the heir to the throne. Elrond is known to be skeptical of all rings of power.
Season 3 could also introduce Elrond’s wife Celebrían (who is also Galadriel’s daughter in Tolkien)… who, for a sad reason, is no longer at Elrond’s side in Rivendell, which was only introduced in the series in Frodo’s time. (Attention book spoiler: Celebrían does not become the mother of Elladan, Elrohir and Arwen until the Third Age. She is later kidnapped by orcs and has her spirit broken. But maybe the series will make Elrond a single father of three children earlier, when his wife leaves Middle-earth and sails alone to the West?)
It will be at least two years before we find out which path the Lord of the Rings series chooses to destroy Elrond’s optimism. We don’t expect the third season of The Rings of Power on Amazon Prime until fall 2026 at the earliest.
