You want entertaining and humorous action, but are bored with the conventional superhero fare? Then you should definitely give Ryan Reynolds as a quick-witted antihero a chance.
Deadpool is definitely not your friendly neighborhood superhero. If you are hoping for a superhero who plays by the rules, you will quickly be disappointed by the 2016 movie Deadpool. Swearing, ruthlessness and provocation of all kinds are the order of the day for the man in the red suit. When you think it can’t get any more intense, Deadpool ups the ante.
Deadpool and both sequels can be watched anytime on Disney+.
Deadpool is a “classic love story” that ends in revenge and mayhem
What exactly is Deadpool about? If you ask Deadpool himself, he explains his movie as a classic love story: man meets woman, they both fall in love with each other and that’s it. But as always, life has a few twists in store. After Wade Wilson (Ryan Reynolds) gets together with his lady love Vanessa (Morena Baccarin), he is diagnosed with cancer. The only chance of recovery is a painful torture to activate mutant cells.
This procedure cures his cancer, gives him superhuman strength and regenerative healing, but it also leaves Wade Wilson drastically disfigured. A return to his old life and to Vanessa is unthinkable. Instead, it is the birth of Deadpool, who from now on hunts the man who is responsible for all this and is also the only one who can reverse his disfigured appearance: Ajax (Ed Skrein).
On his revenge mission, Deadpool gets support from two X-Men: Colossus (Stefan Kapičić) and his apprentice Negasonic Teenage Warhead (Brianna Hildebrand).
Explicit action and sarcastic humor on Disney+: Deadpool does everything differently
Deadpool impresses with long and intense action scenes. The opening sequence alone lasts over 12 minutes and is an epic sequence of massive battles that captivates the audience and doesn’t let up from start to finish. In contrast to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, there is no shortage of blood and grotesque injuries here – every blow, every hit is explicitly staged to the last consequence.
But that’s not the only thing that makes this movie from the X-Men universe so special. The craziest thing about Deadpool? He is fully aware of his role as a comic character and talks to us viewers. So don’t be surprised if you are suddenly addressed directly.
In the trailer, you can see for yourself the ironic tone of the film:
While Deadpool’s mouth was sewn shut when he first appeared on screen in X-Men Origins: Wolverine in 2009, he was chattering away in his own film seven years later. In doing so, he pokes fun at himself and the entire superhero industry in his own uniquely sarcastic way. The result is an unforgettable mix of action, humor, and meta commentary. Everything is made fun of: his failed role as Green Lantern from the DC universe, the Fox Studio, because it couldn’t afford any bigger X-Men, and even Ryan Reynolds himself.
