In our end-of-year review, we look at the 2024 film releases that received the best ratings on Moviepilot. In addition to several sci-fi hits, there is also a Christmas movie and a Netflix surprise.
While the editorial team is still choosing their best films and series, we are also looking at the ratings of the entire Moviepilot community in parallel to this internal ranking to determine the best films of 2024. These are the best films of 2024 according to your ratings
The best films of 2023 already showed a surprising mix. Now, we’ve looked at all the film releases of 2024 again to filter out your favorites. To qualify, a film had to have at least 70 ratings and be released in theaters, on streaming services, on DVD, or on TV between January 1 and December 31, 2024. In the event of a tie, the invisible decimal places counted. (Data as of December 19, 2024)

An Italian film has sneaked into the top 10: the black-and-white tragicomedy Tomorrow is Another Day travels back to Rome in 1946. Delia (Paola Cortellesi) loves her three children but suffers at the hands of an abusive husband. A letter and a social upheaval give her life a new direction.
9th best film of 2024: King’s Land
Mads Mikkelsen shone in the Danish historical drama King’s Land this year. In it, the king wants to make an inhospitable stretch of land usable: Jutland. Ludwig von Kahlen takes on this seemingly impossible task and plans to achieve prosperity and glory. However, the endeavor also has enemies that he is dealing with.
8th place best movies 2024: Anora

Anora begins as a Pretty Woman story, when erotic dancer Ani (Mikey Madison) and the Russian heir (Mark Eydelshteyn) become closer, but his rich family has something against the marriage to the sex worker. But then the Cinderella story takes an unexpected turn and becomes the powerful cinematic rush of a New York odyssey that you simply have to experience. Sean Baker’s epic winning Cannes is well deserved.
7. Best films of 2024:
If you only watch one German film this year, make it this one. Dying defies categorization as a genre and is a haunting character study, a brutal-humorous parody and a tragic negotiation of death all at once. The three-hour ensemble drama with Lars Eidinger, Corinna Harfouch and Co. explored all facets of the Lurie family’s life and made Dying the best-rated German film of the year on Moviepilot.
Ranked 6th among the best films of 2024: All of Us Strangers
One of the most intense cinematic experiences of the year was provided by 2024 All of Us Strangers, which used the simplest of means to unleash a great fantasy emotional storm: Andrew Scott (Ripley) plays a lonely screenwriter who suddenly encounters his parents again, who had actually died, and at the same time falls in love with his neighbor (Gladiator 2 star Paul Mescal). It was directed by Andrew Haigh (45 Years).
5th best film of 2024: The Holdovers

As a Christmas movie, The Holdovers 2024 was released in German cinemas in January, a little late. All the better that Alexander Payne could establish himself as a holiday great, according to the reviews, when Paul Giamatti, as a hated teacher, has to take care of the teenagers who don’t go home for the winter holidays. It feels a bit like Snape staying at Hogwarts alone with Harry Potter over the holidays.
4th best movie of 2024: The Wild Robot
Inside Out 2 is the most successful film of the year. In terms of ratings, however, the Pixar sequel is surpassed by another animated film: In The Wild Robot, a machine woman crashes on an island inhabited only by animals, which brings about an unusual rapprochement between the two sides. A visually stunning sci-fi adventure with a lot of heart, Roz and her adopted gosling Brightbill conquered cineastes and families alike.
3rd best movie of 2024: Poor Things
Poor Things not only earned Emma Stone her second Oscar in 2024, but also earned this ranking third place among the best films. The provocative sci-fi film by Yorgos Lanthimos (The Lobster) fuses Frankenstein and Barbie into a somewhat different coming-of-age film and features other stars such as Willem Dafoe and Mark Ruffalo.
2nd best movie of 2024: Netflix’s The Greatest Night in Pop
A movie with a top rating that many probably still didn’t have on their screens this year is The Greatest Night in Pop. The music documentary was released on Netflix back in January 2024 and tells the story of how stars like Michael Jackson and Lionel Richie came together in 1985 to create an extraordinary song for charity: “We are the World” made history and is still played over and over again (especially at Christmas).
