In The Rain on Netflix, a deadly catastrophe wipes out large parts of the Scandinavian population. The survivors are now exposed to a merciless struggle.
In The Rain combines dark science fiction with intense coming-of-age drama as a group of teenagers try to survive and find answers in their Scandinavian homeland after a mass extinction.
The Netflix mystery series The Rain: This is what it’s about
A deadly virus that is transmitted through rain wipes out a large proportion of the population in Scandinavia within a few years. Simone Andersen (Alba August) and her brother Rasmus (Lucas Lynggaard Tønnesen) only survived the catastrophe because they sought shelter in an underground shelter in time.
Six years later, they venture back to the surface and meet other survivors. Together, they face the challenge of staying alive in a post-apocalyptic world – and growing up at the same time.
Survival vs. togetherness: 3 Netflix seasons full of high tension
The Rain is the first Netflix series developed in Denmark and it’s a doozy. When Simone and Rasmus return, they find a world that is no longer the same. What awaits them is an intense struggle for survival – and thanks to the direction of Kenneth Kainz and Natasha Arthy, we feel every minute of it. In a cool look, the series follows its protagonists through the Scandinavian landscape, never missing an opportunity to show that no one is really safe here.
Kainz and Arthy succeed in combining the classic basic motifs of a post-apocalyptic setting with the everyday concerns of their characters: survival instinct vs. cohesion. Simone and her companions are portrayed with all their strengths and weaknesses. Their search for identity is at least as much the focus as the search for answers.
The mystery factor is emphasized
From the first episode, it is clear that the virus cannot come out of nowhere. Of course, the hope for an antidote also plays a crucial role. In addition, a mysterious hint from Simone and Rasmus’s father indicates that there are people who know more about the cause of the virus – and they have to find it. A challenge in a world where you can hardly be sure to live to see the next day and technology only works to a limited extent.
The difficult search for the truth adds an extra layer of mystery and makes the characters’ struggle for survival all the more gripping.
