Nathan Fillion’s involvement in a new series has sparked fear among The Rookie fans. Will the star leave the crime hit?
Nathan Fillion has been the face of The Rookie for 7 seasons and the popular crime series would be unthinkable without him. While an eighth season for the LAPD crew was confirmed just a few days ago, some Rookie fans have doubts as to whether Fillion will return for it. This is because the actor has recently been offered another major project.
Nathan Fillion is to play in the DC series Lanterns – and The Rookie fans are afraid
After Nathan Fillion will be seen as Guy Gardner in the upcoming Superman, he is also set to return for the role in the planned DC series Lanterns. This was reported by Deadline at the end of March. The series is currently in production and is expected to be released in 2026.
Thus, the news came just days before The Rookie was officially renewed for an 8th season. While it has not been officially confirmed that Nathan Fillion will be seen again as John Nolan here, fans can breathe a sigh of relief for now: there are currently no signs that Fillion is leaving The Rookie.
It was only in March 2025, during an interview on The Jennifer Hudson Show, that he called The Rookie “the best job I ever had.” He also praised working with Jenna Dewan, who plays his partner Bailey Nune in the series. Despite these statements, it is unlikely that Fillion will soon leave the series.
At the same time, Fillion can be seen alongside a large ensemble in DC’s Lanterns: here he joins a cast including Kyle Chandler, Aaron Pierre and many more. It is unlikely that he will have a sole starring role. So the shooting of Lanterns shouldn’t be so extensive for Fillion that he would have to put The Rookie on hold.
When and where is The Rookie shown?
The seventh season of The Rookie is currently airing in both the US and Germany. New episodes are released in this country every Friday, shortly after the US broadcast on Sky or WOW in a streaming subscription. There are currently 11 episodes available in German dubbed versions. The season will have 18 episodes in total.
