Minecraft has started with incredible numbers in the cinemas, so that part 2 is already being talked about. But what is the sequel about? The director makes a clear statement.
The first box office hit of the year has been confirmed: a Minecraft movie exceeded all box office expectations at the weekend and had the best start of any video game movie in the US. The fantasy adventure has so far grossed $323 million worldwide, with no end in sight.
It is therefore hardly surprising that both fans and the industry are speculating about a sequel. So far, the studio Warner Bros. has not officially announced a second part. Nevertheless, director Jared Hess (Napoleon Dynamite) is already hinting at the direction Minecraft 2 will take.
The story of Minecraft 2 revolves around Alex
Deadline sat down with Hess to talk about the success of Minecraft. In the course of this, the question was raised as to which character would drive the sequel, if there were to be one. Hess’ answer is unequivocal:
The character we teased [at the end of the movie] is Alex. She is the second important character from Minecraft. It’s about Steve and Alex. She’s the one we definitely want to have [in the sequel].
Just like Steve, played by Jack Black, Alex is a playable character from the video game. Since 2014, she has been available as a so-called skin for players of the open-world game. Later, other characters such as Noor, Sunny, Ari, Zuri, Makena, Kai and Efe were added. But there is no sign of them yet.
Those who stayed in the theater until the end credits rolled were able to catch a first glimpse of Alex: in the post-credit scene of Minecraft, Steve returns to the real world only to discover that someone else has moved into his old house. That someone is Alex.
Fantasy sequel: Who plays Alex in Minecraft 2?
This is a tricky question, because in the first part, two actresses take on the part. While Kate McKinnon lends her voice to the iconic Minecraft heroine, Alice May Connolly appears as a body double in front of the camera. It is questionable whether this approach to the character will be retained for Minecraft 2.
If Alex plays a major role in the sequel, it would be much less complicated to have the part played by one person alone. The current version of the character is probably explained by the fact that those responsible for the film were not yet sure exactly how it would continue and wanted to test one option first.
Kate McKinnon or Alice May Connolly? Or maybe someone completely different? With McKinnon, who has appeared in films like Barbie and Ghostbusters in the past and comes from the Saturday Night Live corner, Minecraft 2 could at least secure another great comedy talent to star alongside Jack Black.
