From the creator of “Pam & Tommy” and with Marvel power, the series “Welcome To Chippendales” is coming soon to Disney+. The trailer shows not only a lot of half- to three-quarter-naked guys, but also some drama, (true-)crime and even humour.
“Welcome To Chippendales” is based on true events and tells the life story of Indian-born US entrepreneur Somen “Steve” Banerjee. Banerjee, portrayed by Kumail Nanjiani, became known as the creator of the male strip troupe Chippendales. To this day, nearly two million people a year see their show, which can be experienced in Las Vegas and also tours successfully around the world.
Founded at the end of the 1970s, Banerjee and the dance ensemble, which is primarily aimed at women who want to party, have repeatedly had plenty of trouble with moral guardians, police, club owners, rival promoters and criminal associates such as the violent Paul Snider (Dan Stevens). It is only when Banerjee meets choreographer Nick De Noia (Murray Bartlett) that things really start to take shape.
When the company finally begins to turn a profit, however, there is a dispute between the business partners. It goes so far that it even looks like the possible end of the Chippendales. Fortunately, the desperate Steve still has his Irene (Annaleigh Ashford), on whose love and support he can count. Nevertheless, he secretly harbours murderous desires towards his partner …
In North America, “Welcome To Chippendales” will debut with the first two episodes on the streaming service Hulu on 22 November 2022. Here in Germany, the series launch has been announced for 11 January 2023 on Disney+.
ABUNDANT MARVEL POWER FOR “WELCOME TO CHIPPENDALES “
The series’ creator and producer is Robert Siegel, the screenwriter of such box-office hits as “The Wrestler” with Mickey Rourke and “The Founder” with Michael Keaton. Siegel most recently created, wrote and produced the popular miniseries “Pam & Tommy” about Playboy model Pamela Anderson and Mötley Crüe drummer Tommy Lee.
As director and executive producer for “Welcome To Chippendales”, Siegel hired Matt Shakman, who did the same jobs at “WandaVision”. Currently, the Californian is in preparation for shooting the 2025 big-screen release of Marvel’s “Fantastic Four”, which he is set to direct.
The lead actor of “Welcome To Chippendales” also has a direct connection to the MCU, as he is Kumail Nanjiani from the blockbuster “Eternals”. Other ensemble members with Marvel connections include “Beauty and the Beast” star Dan Stevens, who played a major part in the comic book series based “Legion”, Murray Bartlett, who has a recurring role in the “Iron Fist” series, and Nicola Peltz from “Marvel’s Inhumans”.
Other cast members include 1990s icon Juliette Lewis (“From Dusk Till Dawn”, “Natural Born Killers”), Annaleigh Ashford from “Masters Of Sex” and “Girls” and “Glee” star Andrew Rannells.
