In the meantime, “Drive” maker Nicolas Winding Refn is no longer in the film business, but rather in the series business. After “Too Old To Die Young”, his next mindfuck awaits us with “Copenhagen Cowboy”. Here is the trailer:
Filmmaker Nicolas Winding Refn is the subject of a difference of opinion. Advocacy and dislike really almost balance each other out with the man who celebrated his breakthrough with “Drive”. For a while now, Refn has been active on the series market, where he lives out his mannerisms, which many love but many also hate, even more than in his films. The series “Too Old To Die Young”, which the Dane shot for Amazon Prime Video, was described by some as a “slow-motion narrative” due to its provocative, decelerated pacing.
With “Copenhagen Cowboy”, Nicolas Winding Refn’s new series is now just around the corner. This will not appear on Amazon Prime Video, but on Netflix. And we won’t have to wait too much longer: the six-episode miniseries will be released on the streaming service on 5 January 2023. After a teaser has already been released, we can now see the first long trailer – and it promises Nicolas Winding Refn in pure form.
THIS IS “COPENHAGEN COWBOY “
The story centres on a mysterious woman named Miu (Angela Bundalovic). She has lived a life on the edge of legality, which has been fraught with problems. However, Miu is now on the verge of leaving the criminal underworld of the Danish capital behind and wants to start an honest life in Copenhagen. In her search for justice, she meets her arch-enemy Rakel (Lola Corfixen) once again – and embarks on an odyssey that blurs the boundaries between reality and the supernatural.
We already had the pleasure of seeing Copenhagen Cowboy at the 2022 Venice Film Festival. We came to the conclusion: this is probably the most wacky series of the year! Now, however, the new Refn series will no longer be officially launched in 2022, but only at the beginning of 2023 – and we are curious to see whether “Copenhagen Cowboy” can also earn the title of “wackiest series of the year” in 2023. In any case, it won’t be easy to find something similarly wacky in the series landscape next year. By the way, Nicolas Winding Refn’s Fuck-The-Establishment introduction to the screening in Venice was as unconventional as the series itself:

In his review, our editor-in-chief Christoph Petersen writes: “It’s a bird-wild exercise in style that fans will celebrate mercilessly, while casual viewers who at least watched the first three episodes in a disturbed-amused way will probably slowly say goodbye to ‘Copenhagen Cowboy’ after episode 4.” Also, without giving too much away, you can also look forward to vampires with a massive penis complex here!
