Was the Netflix rescue of Manifest worth it? Stephen King drops

by Mike

Bestselling author Stephen King is an avowed fan of the mystery series “Manifest”. Now he has finally found the time to watch the new episodes on Netflix – and writes on Twitter how he likes season 4, part 1 so far

Netflix often cancels series prematurely and thus annoys fans, most recently “Fate: The Winx Saga”, for example. But sometimes the streaming service is also the great saviour and extends a series that was cancelled by another provider – in the case of “Manifest”, fans now get a conclusion on Netflix after the broadcaster NBC pulled the plug after three seasons. In a series in which the resolution of a central mystery (in this case: What happened to Flight 828?) is actually worked towards the whole time, a premature cancellation would have been particularly annoying.

The prominent “Manifesto” fan Stephen King also saw it that way and fought on Twitter to save the series. Netflix listened to the fans and gave “Manifest” a conclusion in XXL format – ten episodes can currently be seen in season 4.1, another ten episodes will be released in 2023 as season 4.2. And now Stephen King has also had a look at the new episodes. On Twitter, the star author writes that he has already watched six of the ten new episodes on Netflix.

And the renewal through Netflix has been worth it in his eyes: it feels like reuniting with old friends you thought were lost forever.

This suggests what King seems to like most about the series: the sympathy with the characters. The dialogue is probably not, as the author criticised it in the run-up to the start of the season. He wrote about season 4 that he hoped that phrases like “It’s complicated” and “Trust me” could be avoided – unfortunately, in our opinion, this hope was not fulfilled.

But the strengths seem to outweigh the weaknesses, and Stephen King has stuck straight to the new season. Only one day after the first tweet, he announced on the short message service that he was already on episode 7 – and he wondered whether Cal Stone (Ty Doran) was old enough to drink alcohol.

That’s a tough one to answer, of course, because Cal is one of those people who hadn’t aged a day after the Montego Airways plane landed five and a half years late. But when the boy of about 13 disappeared at the end of season 3, he aged up those years in one fell swoop, so he came back as about 18. About two years passed between seasons 3 and 4, and a few months go by in season 4 as well – so by now Cal could well be 21, old enough to drink in the US. His mental maturity, of course, is another question altogether, given the lightning-fast ageing.

In season 4, part 2, the grand finale, however, it will probably not be about how old Cal Stone is exactly, but whether he can defeat villain Angelina (Holly Taylor). When exactly the second part of season 4 will be released on Netflix is not yet known, but we could make some solid guesses:
