Wet Sand: Georgian drama about a tragic queer love story
Plot and background
The inhabitants of the small village on the Black Sea in Georgia all believe they know each other well. However, when Eliko is found hanged in his house one day, a lot of questions arise. Eliko’s granddaughter Moe (Bebe Sesitashvili) travels from the city to the coast after a long time to organise her grandfather’s funeral. On the spot, Moe encounters a tight web of lies that stretches back over twenty years into the past. Together with her new-found friend Fleshka (Megi Kobaladze), she finally breaks the decades-long silence and reveals the tragic story of Eliko’s secret love affair with the villager Amnon (Gia Agumava).
“Wet Sand” – cast, background, cinema release
“Wet Sand” by Elene Naveriani (“I am Truly a Drop of Sun on Earth”), born in 1985 in Tbilisi, Georgia, is a cinematic manifesto against homophobia. The melancholic portrait of the outsiders of rural Georgia gives them a voice and shows a touching story of intergenerational solidarity and queer empowerment. The Georgian drama premiered at the Locarno Film Festival, where lead actor Gia Agumava was awarded Best Actor for his performance as Amnon in the section “Cineasti del presente”. Other roles include Bebe Sesitashvili as Moe, Megi Kobaladze as Fleshka, as well as Giorgi Tsereteli, Eka Chavleishvili, Zaal Goguadze and Kakha Kobaladze.
“Wet Sand” can be seen in German cinemas from 24 November 2022.
