Sometimes you don’t need a complex story, hectolitres of fake blood or a star-studded cast slogging through sinister, pompous settings to thrill with a horror film: “The Boy Behind The Door” pursues a simple, suspenseful basic idea and pulls it off straightforwardly – and thus proved to be a real darling of the film press!
“The Boy Behind The Door” scored a great 97 percent on Rotten Tomatoes, making it one of the top horror films released in Germany this year. In May, the kidnapping thriller was released on DVD and Blu-ray, and is now also available as a subscription on Amazon Prime Video:

Bobby (Lonnie Chavis) and his best friend Kevin (Ezra Dewey) are kidnapped during a walk in the woods. When they regain consciousness, they find themselves tied up in the boot of a car. Kevin is soon taken to the attic by a mysterious man and chained there. Bobby, on the other hand, manages to free himself in a moment of luck. Now he hopes to save his friend and get one over on the kidnapper. But that’s easier thought than done with a young, panicked mind in all the rush…
Not to let expectations gallop free: The proud 97 percent on Rotten Tomatoes should not be taken in the case of “The Boy Behind The Door” to mean that this is some innovative stroke of horror genius. Instead, the feature-length debut of director and screenwriter duo David Charbonier & Justin Powell is simply a consensual piece of suspense cinema, which explains the high density of positive reviews.
Therefore: “The Boy Behind The Door” may be one of the best horror films to hit German home cinemas this year, according to Rottentomatoes. But that does not mean that it is an all-embracing genre highlight. Nevertheless, it is a straightforwardly made and narrated suspense film that lives from how competently Charbonier & Powell extract a dense atmosphere from a small budget. In addition, the two young leads skilfully embody sympathetic identification figures who believably provide nerve-wracking moments of frustration.

Because while the boys in “The Boy Behind The Door” fear for their lives, they commit one hair-raising, annoying mistake after another. Out of fear, out of carelessness owed to their constant haste, and because of their age and the resulting lack of knowledge. Certainly: this is a test of patience for the screen yelling “No! Don’t do that! I would act so much smarter in this situation!” audience.
But at the same time it is a great thrill if you can get involved and put yourself in the frightened boys’ shoes. And: Whenever they make the right decision for once, when they don’t ride themselves even deeper into misery, it has a wonderful triumphant effect. Fear for the children and anger about their mistakes suddenly turns into unleashed jubilation and great thrill whenever they strike back.
