“The Son” – background, cast, cinema release
Following his film debut “The Father”, French filmmaker Florian Zeller adapts another of his plays for the screen with “The Son”. While “The Father” is dedicated to Alzheimer’s disease and sensitively shows how those affected experience this situation themselves, “The Son” shows how family dynamics are upset by divorce. It remains to be seen whether Zeller will subsequently adapt the third play, “The Mother”. Filming for “The Son” already took place in autumn 2021 in London, Great Britain.
For “The Son”, Zeller was able to unite the impressive cast with stars such as Hugh Jackman (“Les Miserables”), Vanessa Kirby (“Mission: Impossible” films), Laura Dern (“Jurassic Park” series) as well as Zen McGrath (“Red Dog”). The casting of Anthony Hopkins, who won the Oscar for Best Actor in a Leading Role for Zeller’s “The Father”, is also a surprise.
The drama is celebrating its world premiere at the Venice Film Festival, where it is competing for the Golden Lion. “The Father” previously celebrated its premiere at Sundance. It remains to be seen whether Zeller will succeed in stealing another gold trophy at the 2023 Oscars after his Oscar success in 2021 for “The Father” as Best Adapted Screenplay just two years later.
The Son” will be released in German cinemas on 26 January 2023.
