Plot and background
The German-Austrian painter and sculptor Anselm Kiefer is considered one of the most important visual artists of our time. After studying art in Freiburg and Karlsruhe, he triggered a scandal and at the same time the beginning of his career with his final project, when he performed the Hitler salute in various European sites as part of a photographically documented performance. Kiefer’s further work was also strongly influenced by themes from German history and culture and accompanied by further scandals, which, however, did not diminish the success of the provocateur. His life story, his artistic work, his inspiration from literature and poetry, as well as the artist’s later fascination with mythology, religion and history are cinematically explored in the documentary “Anselm – Das Rauschen der Zeit”, with immersive shots blurring the line between film and painting.

In “Anselm – The Rustle of Time,” Oscar-nominated hit German director Wim Wenders (“The Sky Over Berlin”) takes viewers* on a cinematic journey through the work of an artist whose art explores the human condition and the cyclical nature of history, using 3D technology and 6K resolution. Wenders walked in Kiefer’s footsteps over the course of two years and considers the various stages of his life and places of creation in the comprehensive documentary, which spans Kiefer’s career of more than five decades between Germany and France.
The 3D portrait of the contemporary German artist premiered as a special screening at Cannes in May 2023, while Wenders also entered his feature film “Perfect Days” in the main competition of the film festival. In this country, “Anselm – The Rush of Time” will be released in cinemas on October 12, 2023.
