Polite Society: British action comedy about an aspiring stuntwoman who tries to save her sister from an ill-fated marriage.

Plot and background

When Ria (Priya Kansara) announces at the breakfast table that she wants to become a stuntwoman, the teenager is only ridiculed by her parents. Only her sister Lena (Ritu Arya) believes in her and helps her train in kung fu. The sisterly bond is close and yet is soon at stake when Lena gets engaged.

For Ria it is clear that Lena’s fiancé and his clan are up to no good. If Lena actually wanted to make a living as an artist, Ria can’t understand how her sister would agree to an arranged marriage. With the help of her friends, Ria plans a daring raid on the wedding party and wants to expose the true machinations of the evil family-in-law-to-be in front of everyone.

“Polite Society” – background, cast, theatrical release

The British action comedy “Polite Society” is the heart project of director and screenwriter Nida Manzoor (“We Are Lady Parts”) and also marks her feature film debut. More than ten years have passed from the first idea to the finished film. On this long road to the goal, she was supported by the team behind “Hot Fuzz” and “Baby Driver”, specifically in the form of Tim Bevan and Eric Fellner as producers. Complementing the production team are Olivier Kaempfer (“Spaceship”) and John Pocock (“Chewing Gum”).

With the necessary dose of humor, martial arts and emotion, a film full of stunts and sizzling gags was created with stars such as Priya Kansara (“Bridgerton”), Ritu Arya (“The Umbrella Academy”, “Barbie”), Shobu Kapoor (“We Are Lady Parts”), Nimra Bucha (“Ms. Marvel”) and Seraphina Beh (“Top Boy”). Lead actress Priya Kansara performed most of her own stunts as well as the opulent dances.

“Polite Society” opens in theaters here on August 24, 2023 and has been given a 16+ release by the FSK.
