Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse: Peter Parker passes the baton to Miles Morales in the Oscar-winning animated film, but he’s long gone from being the only Spider-Man in New York.
Film plot and background
In the Oscar-winning animated film, Peter Parker passes the baton to Miles Morales, who, however, is no longer the only Spider-Man in New York.
Are there other Spider-Man besides Peter Parker? In a parallel universe, the young African-American Miles Morales (originally voiced by Shameik Moore) was also bitten by a radioactively contaminated spider. But Morales has no experience yet in using his new powers. Luckily, a now somewhat aging Peter Parker (Jake Johnson) from another dimension helps out and becomes the mentor of the new Spider-Man.
Quite tricky, the business with the different parallel universes: Miles Morales not only gets company from Peter Parker. Gwen Stacy aka Spider-Gwen (Hailee Steinfeld) also spins her webs, while Spider-Man Noir (Nicolas Cage), Peter Porker aka Spider-Ham (John Mulaney) and Peni Parker (Kimiko Glenn) cause further chaos in New York. However, Morales must take on the fight against the Kingpin (Liev Schreiber) alone.

“Spider-Man: A New Universe” – Backgrounds
After the friendly neighbourhood spider has already received a multitude of live-action films and reboots, Phil Lord and Chris Miller (“The Lego Movie”) produce a visually surprising animated film that focuses on a new hero. In the comics, Miles Morales first appeared in the Ultimate Universe, taking over from Peter Parker. In the animated film, directed by Bob Persichetti (“The Little Prince”), he is not the only spider with superpowers either.
According to their own statements, Phil Lord and Chris Miller are fully absorbed in the animated film as screenwriters and producers. Far from the franchise back and forth of Marvel and Sony, they were able to create a parallel universe to tell a new Spider-Man story. Persichetti makes his directorial debut with “Spider-Man: A New Universe”, having most recently worked on the animated film “The Little Prince”. He was also assisted by Peter Ramsey (“The Keepers of the Light”) as co-director.
At the 2019 Oscars, the visual adventure “Spider-Man: A New Universe” won in the Best Animated Feature category.
