Daniel Richter: documentary by Pepe Danquart about the German artist Daniel Richter.
Plot and background
The Hamburg painter Daniel Richter is considered one of the most important contemporary German artists of abstract painting. And the former punk and squatter has also made a name for himself in the international art scene. His mostly very colourful, large-format paintings are bought, collected and traded worldwide at high prices. The documentary film “Daniel Richter” reveals a glimpse of the rebel and highly political person behind his art.
“Daniel Richter” – background, cinema release
Oscar-winning director Pepe Danquart (“Schwarzfahrer”) follows Daniel Richter over a period of three years and captures the painter’s artistic work and development. The documentary accompanies the celebrated contemporary artist both at major exhibitions in New York and Paris and in intimate moments in his studio, painting, listening to music and reflecting.
“Daniel Richter” is far more than a classic portrait or a homage to the painter’s work. Pepe Danquart explores the question of how the political views of the former punk Richter can be reconciled with his work in the turbo-capitalist art market and how these are reflected in his painting today. The documentary will be released in cinemas on 2 February 2023.
