Promising Young Woman: crime comedy starring Carey Mulligan as a femme fatale who takes revenge on men who take advantage of women in need.
Plot and background
Cassie (Carey Mulligan) had the world at her fingertips. As a medical student, her loved ones assumed a successful career. Nothing could shake her. But when one of her best friends commits suicide, her world is rocked.
She drops out of university, starts working as a barista and lives in her parents’ house. But at night she begins to lead a kind of double life and seeks revenge for the unatoned guilt of her past. Her victims are men (Adam Brody and Christopher Mintz-Plasse) whom she meets in a bar. While she pretends to be drunk, the men pose as supposed saviours in need, only to take advantage of her later. But not with Cassie: she holds up a mirror to them and swears revenge.
When she meets Ryan (Bo Burnham), a former fellow student, she learns more details about her friend’s death. Instead of closure, Cassie becomes even angrier and searches for answers.
