Midlife causes a deep crisis of meaning for the married couple Paul (Christoph Maria Herbst) and Emilia (Christiane Paul). Their former existence is critically examined, their youth is mourned and the hormonal changes in the body into the next stage of life cause the so-called “old age puberty”.
They used to be considered the dream couple par excellence. Paul as a celebrated author and Emilia as a dubbing artist have a fulfilling career and at the same time family happiness with three children: Bo (Wanja Valentin Kube), the inquisitive one, Marie (Bella Bading), the know-it-all, and Fe (Emilia Nöth), whose anger is hard to erase.
Now Emilia wants a relationship break. After a one-night stand with someone else, she throws herself into life and what it has to offer. Paul, on the other hand, falls into a sensory crisis. His friends Theo (Jürgen Vogel) and Jonathan (Peter Jordan) give rather abstruse life advice, his publisher condemns his latest manuscript as “hopeless”.
With antidepressants and testosterone tablets on his side, he thinks an affair with his daughter’s teacher might brighten his mood. The sobering realisation: he misses his youth and Emilia. At a birthday party of a mutual friend, they inevitably meet. But before the divorce is finalised, the children have something to say about it.

Audience favourites in front of and behind the camera: With stars like Christoph Maria Herbst (“Stromberg”), Christiane Paul (“8 Days”), Jürgen Vogel (“Es ist zu deinem Besten”) and Bettina Lamprecht (“The Kangaroo Chronicles”), the new German comedy “Es ist nur eine Phase, Hase” boasts a large star line-up. The novel of the same name on which it is based is by the author duo Maxim Leo and Jochen Gutsch and stayed in the top 3 of Spiegel bestsellers for a year. Their stories about old age puberty are trenchant, tragicomic and relentlessly recreate the lives of forty- and fifty-somethings.
Florian Gallenberger not only directs the German comedy, but adapted the screenplay together with Malte Welding. Es ist nur eine Phase, Hase” will be released in German cinemas from 14 October 2021.
