Underwater: Horror film about the crew of an underwater research station struggling to survive after an earthquake.

Plot and background

A small team of researchers is sent to an unreal terrain: For one month, the research team of Norah (Kristen Stewart), Emily (Jessica Henwick), wisecracker Paul (T.J. Miller), the Captain (Vincent Cassel) and three others are to explore the ocean floor. The research facility is 5,000 miles from shore and seven miles from the bottom of the ocean floor.

However, the drilling triggers a devastating earthquake and masses of water enter the station, isolating the crew from the outside world. The chances of rescue are slim, the researchers have to join forces to survive this exceptional situation. Suddenly they realise that they are not alone at the bottom of the sea. Have they awakened unconceivable creatures in the depths of the earth?

In the first trailer, the horror unfolds:

“Underwater – It’s awakened” – Backgrounds

Director William Eubank has already impressively proven with his first films “Love” and “The Signal” that he has a knack for supernatural sci-fi material. In “Underwater”, a small crew at the seemingly unexplored bottom of the sea is surprised by forces that would have the makings of something out of a horror film like “Alien”.

Filming was completed back in 2017, the delay in release is due to Disney’s purchase of 20th Century Fox. The script was written by Brian Duffield (“The Baysitter”) and Adam Cozad (“Legend of Tarzan”).

“Underwater” – Cast and release date

At the very beginning of the 2020 cinema year, horror fans can look forward to the release of “Underwater – It Has Awakened”. The film opens in cinemas on 9 January 2020. The FSK has given the film an age rating of 16 and up.

The leading role is played by Kristen Stewart (“Personal Shopper”), who cut her hair short especially for the role. Also starring: T.J. Miller (“Silicon Valley”), Vincent Cassel (“Black Swan”) and Jessica Henwick (“Iron Fist”).
