Netflix has finally dropped the official trailer for Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio, the stop-motion animated fantasy that is now premiering in select theaters. It will be available for streaming on December 9.

The Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio trailer gives us a preview of the Oscar-winning director’s reimagined vision of the classic tale. It offers audiences a new look at the titular wooden boy while continuing to highlight the sentimental story of a father’s undying love.

Netflix’s Pinocchio is a stop-motion animated musical that will follow the adventures of a wooden boy in his pursuit of a place in the world. It will feature a star-studded voice ensemble led by newcomer Gregory Mann as the titular wooden boy, Ewan McGregor as Jiminy Cricket, and David Bradley as Geppetto.

“Set during the rise of Fascism in Mussolini’s Italy, the film is a story of love and disobedience as Pinocchio struggles to live up to his father’s expectations,” reads the logline.

Additional cast includes Academy Award winners Tilda Swinton (Isle of Dogs), Christoph Waltz (Epic), and Cate Blanchett (How to Train Your Dragon films), along with Finn Wolfhard (Stranger Things), John Turturro (The Batman), Ron Perlman (Hellboy), Tim Blake Nelson (Watchmen), and Burn Gorman (Enola Holmes).

Oscar winner Guillermo del Toro, who has been attached to the project since 2018, is co-directing Pinocchio along with Mark Gustafson (Fantastic Mr. Fox). It is written by Del Toro and Patrick McHale, with a score by Alexandre Desplat. It hails from The Jim Henson Company, which worked with Netflix on 2019’s The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance.

Producers are del Toro, The Jim Henson Company’s Lisa Henson and Blanca Lista, ShadowMachine’s Alex Bulkley and Corey Campodonico, Exile Entertainment’s Gary Ungar, and Gris Grimly.
