The German Netflix production “Die Kaiserin” attracts a wide audience in front of the screens worldwide and even breaks records. After six episodes, however, the first season is already over. Will there be a second season?
With 47.21 million hours watched in the first week, the Netflix series “Die Kaiserin” broke a record worldwide: The makers can be happy about the best German-language series start of all times on the streaming platform. Even in the USA, the new version of the story about the Austrian Empress Sissi made it to second place in the Netflix top 10, and the series is also popular in numerous other countries.
Of course, the question quickly arises whether it is really over after six episodes or whether viewers can look forward to a second season of “The Empress”. Officially, a continuation has not yet been announced, but there is a lot to be said for more episodes.
HOW LIKELY IS SEASON 2 OF “THE EMPRESS”?
The Austrian Empress Elisabeth, better known as Sissi, has probably been at home in most German-speaking households for many years. After all, the feature film “Sissi – Die junge Kaiserin” (including two sequels) from 1956 is shown on TV every Christmas and still has a large fan base. So it’s no wonder that the Netflix remake by showrunner Katharina Eyssen (“Heute bin ich blond”) has also become a real hit and its success makes a second season likely.
So it’s clear: There are still many stories that can be told about Sissi. There is definitely enough historical material for a second season of “The Empress”. Moreover, in the first six episodes of the Netflix production, we only accompany the beginnings of the relationship between the empress and her husband Franz Joseph. The sixth episode of the first season ends with a cliffhanger that could be followed up perfectly in a second season.
THIS IS WHAT THE 2ND SEASON OF “THE EMPRESS” COULD LOOK LIKE
In the first season of “The Empress”, the Bavarian Duchess Elisabeth (Devrim Lingnau) marries the Austrian Emperor Franz Joseph (Philip Froissant) and finds it difficult to find her way in her new life at court. The nature-loving young woman actually wants to lead an unconventional life, but must get used to the strict rules of Habsburg rule and at the same time fight a battle against her conservative mother-in-law.
Even though the makers of the first season of “The Empress” do not necessarily always stick to historical facts, one can guess what might happen next with Sisi, Franz and Co. After all, the entire court is waiting for a male heir to the throne, whom the empress should give birth to as soon as possible – something that was already addressed at the end of season 1 with Sisi’s pregnancy.
However, the real Elisabeth first gave birth to two daughters and had to deal with a hard blow of fate. This period of life alone should fill several episodes of the series and offers enough conflict potential and drama for further exciting stories that could be retold.
