Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3: After the temporarily fired director James Gunn was brought back, the protectors of the galaxy plunge into their third adventure.
Plot and background
After the Guardians successfully defended the galaxy against Thanos’ henchman Ronan (Lee Pace) in the first part and brought the Infinity Stone to safety for now, the group, led by Star-Lord Peter Quill (Chris Pratt), had to defend themselves against the alien Ego (Kurt Russell), who is none other than Quill’s father, and put an end to his machinations. With worldwide box office takings of nearly $864 million, their second mission was even more successful at the box office than Part 1.
Promptly it was announced that fans can also look forward to a third part of the “Guardians of the Galaxy”. After Thanos (Josh Brolin) could be defeated in “Avengers: Endgame” and Thor joined the protectors of the galaxy, the rumor mill is bubbling, as it continues with Star-Lord’s crew. How does the reunion with Gamora play out? What role will Adam Warlock play? And what does all this have to do with Rocket’s origin story? The production of part 3, which was believed to be safe, stood for some time on shaky ground: actually, it was quickly determined that director and screenwriter James Gunn, who was already responsible for the first two films, should also be hired for the upcoming film. Surprisingly, Disney reacted to old, politically incorrect tweets from Gunn and fired him in the summer of 2018. Quickly, another comic book giant secured his services and so Gunn was hired for the next DC anti-hero film “The Suicide Squad”.
Both fans and parts of the “Guardians” cast ran up a storm for months after this Disney decision – ultimately successfully. Disney withdrew its decision in March 2019, the project nevertheless moved significantly back in the production schedule.
