The Last Name: sequel to Sönke Wortmann’s comedy “The First Name”.
Film plot and background
Continuation of Sönke Wortmann’s comedy “The First Name”.
With the comedy “Der Vorname” (The First Name), the multi-award-winning director Sönke Wortmann released his adaptation of the French film of the same name from 2012 in 2018. Both critics and audiences were largely enthusiastic, and the film grossed almost 7.5 million euros at the box office. Four years later, Constantin is releasing the sequel with the consistent title “The Last Name” in German cinemas.
“The Last Name” plot
The plot picks up two years after the last somewhat degenerate family reunion. This time the verbal family battle is not fought at the dining table at home, but at the finca of mother Dorothea (Iris Berben) on Lanzarote. The mood between Stephan (Christoph Maria Herbst), Thomas (Florian David Fitz) and their wives Elisabeth (Caroline Peters) and Anna (Janina Uhse) quickly becomes tense despite the holiday mood.
When Dorothea announces that she has since married René (Justus von Dohnanyi) and taken his surname König, the renewed discussions begin. While Elisabeth and Thomas are shocked by the news, it is Stephan of all people who gets hung up on surnames. As the family holiday continues, other explosive secrets are revealed.
“The Last Name” – background and cinema release
The sequel to “Der Vorname” relies on continuity both in front of and behind the camera. The director is once again Sönke Wortmann (“The Moving Man”, “Contra”), while Claudius Pläging contributes the screenplay as he did with the first part. The main cast of Florian David Fitz, Christoph Maria Herbst, Janina Uhse and Caroline Peters will also be on board for the second film. Iris Berben will also play her role as pot-smoking hippie mother Dorothea Böttcher once again.
The theatrical release of “Der Nachname” is currently uncertain. The FSK release is still pending.
