After “The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power” Season 1, are you looking for new fantasy material? Then check out “The Wheel of Time” on Amazon Prime Video, which looks nowhere near as spectacular, but entertains properly
“The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power” Season 1 has come to an end after 8 episodes, now it’s time to wait. A second season is already being filmed, but the effort is likely to be so great that there will not be any new episodes of “The Rings of Power” until 2024. But fortunately there is another series worth watching for fantasy fans on Amazon Prime Video: “The Wheel of Time”.
“The Wheel of Time” started in November 2021 on Prime Video and can definitely be considered Amazon’s first attempt to fill the gap in the market for fantasy series that has arisen since the end of “Game Of Thrones”. If you like stories full of magic, evil creatures, sinister rulers and brave heroes and heroines, you can definitely risk a look. Read more in our review of the first episodes.
Another incentive for “The Rings of Power” fans: Season 1 is very reminiscent of “The Hobbit” and “The Lord of the Rings” (the films/books, not the Amazon series). Namely, in “The Wheel of Time” a group of unsuspecting characters (= Hobbits) from a remote corner of the world (= Shire) are recruited by a powerful sorceress (= Gandalf) for an important mission (= destruction of the Ring) to take up the fight against the great villain (= Sauron). “

However, we do not want to omit one important note here: “The Wheel Of Time” looks considerably less spectacular compared to “The Rings Of Power” and has nowhere near the same fantastic show values in costumes, sets and staging – there is simply no hiding the huge difference in budget here.
“The Wheel of Time” (the original title) is supposed to cost “only” 80 million dollars per season, while Amazon provided a whopping 462 million dollars for the first season of “The Rings of Power”. It is true that this sum is already being used to prepare for future seasons, but either way, these are two completely different weight categories.

But “The Wheel of Time” will not only have one season, but two very soon. We’re guessing a November 2022 release, after interest in “The Rings of Power” has died down a bit. So if you start with season 1 now and split the episodes a bit, you could probably go straight on with season 2.
