“Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery” – background, cast, streaming start
Following the cinema success of the crime comedy “Knives Out” in 2019 with a star-studded cast and 007 actor Daniel Craig in the leading role, viewers* can look forward to two sequels from now on, which will be released exclusively on streaming provider Netflix. In the second case, called “Glass Onion”, the sleazy but shrewd private detective travels to Greece.
Anyone expecting a similar experience to the predecessor “Knives Out” has already been put off by director and screenwriter Rian Johnson. Similar to crime writer Agatha Christie, a different case is told from story to story, but tonally, under the guise of a classic whodunnit story, “spy thriller, proto-slasher horror, serial killer hunts, gothic romances” and the like could be recycled. So how “Glass Onion” differs from “Knives Out” will be revealed from 23 December 2022, when the sequel launches on Netflix. Before that, the glamorous world premiere will take place at the Toronto Film Festival in September 2022.
One thing is certain: Netflix has invited the crème de la crème of the acting world for the sequel. In addition to Daniel Craig, Ethan Hawke (“The Black Phone”), Kate Hudson (“Almost Famous”), Jessica Henwick (“Iron Fist”), Kathryn Hahn (“WandaVision”), Edward Norton (“Twilight”), Dave Bautista (“Guardians of the Galaxy”), Janelle Monae (“Antebellum”), Leslie Odom Jr. (“Hamilton”) and Madelyn Cline (“Outer Banks”) can be seen in other leading roles.
