The first season of the Amazon sci-fi series “Periphery” recently came to an end. However, there doesn’t seem to have been too much hype so far – completely unjustifiably, thinks FILMSTARTS YouTube host Sebastian.
“The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power” was without question the biggest Amazon series this year, which also attracted a huge amount of interest, not least because of the popular template. This may have somewhat overshadowed the start of the sci-fi series “Periphery”, which is also running on the online retailer’s streaming service.
Because even though the dystopia produced by “Westworld” creators Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy became the new No. 1 most-streamed series on Amazon Prime Video after the “Rings of Power” finale (the exact viewing figures are unknown, however), the public discussion about “Periphery” was fairly limited, at least in this country.
Reason enough for sci-fi fan and FILMSTARTS YouTube host Sebastian to take up the cudgels for the adaptation of a novel by genre guru and “Neuromancer” author William Gibson. Because for him, after the recent end of season 1, it’s clear: “Peripherie” is one of THE series highlights of the year!
SOMEWHAT DIFFERENT TIME TRAVEL WITH MINDFUCK TWIST
As Sebastian points out in his video above, the book adaptation creates a fascinating future world full of complex ideas and interesting concepts from front to back. He was particularly taken with the somewhat different time travel approach and a resulting, completely unexpected mindfuck twist. Not to mention the exciting and wonderfully acted characters and the fantastic visual realisation. Sebastian explains in more detail in his review clip what else makes the series a clear recommendation for him.
But be careful: At the end of the video (around 13:30) there is a spoiler section for those who have already seen the entire first season. To join in the discussion about “Peripherie”, you can simply visit the FILMSTARTS YouTube channel
WHAT “PERIPHERY” IS ABOUT
In the near future, young Flynne Fisher (Chloë Grace Moretz) and her brother Burton (Jack Reynor) take care of their blind mother together. One day, the two receive an offer from an ominous company to try out a new virtual reality technology, which they naturally accept as passionate VR fans with chronic money problems.
When Flynne immerses herself in the supposed simulation of a London 70 years in the future and is supposed to steal something there, she is amazed at how real it all feels – only to discover on her return that the whole thing was actually real and that her consciousness really has travelled into the future. But that is exactly why she is now targeted by a mysterious organisation and soon has to fear for her life…
