In Germany, “My Spy” aka “The Spy Next Door” was shown briefly in the cinema, but in the rest of the world the action comedy for Amazon Prime Video became a streaming hit. So now there will soon be “My Spy 2″…
Just before the first theatres closed, “The Spy Next Door” was still released in German cinemas in March 2020. In the USA, on the other hand, the cinema release had already been cancelled, Amazon Prime Video took over the film and the light agent action comedy hit a nerve. According to the data analysis company ScreenEngine, the film starring Marvel star Dave Bautista advanced to become the third most watched streaming title ever in the entire year 2020 – even ahead of the Netflix action cracker “Tyler Rake: Extraction”. Only “Borat 2” and the Disney Plus release of “Hamilton” were streamed more frequently this year.
So now Amazon Prime Video itself commissioned a sequel. “My Spy 2: The Eternal City” is now to be released worldwide directly on Amazon Prime Video. The focus is once again on CIA agent and super spy JJ (Dave Bautista), who once again teams up with little Sophie (Chloe Coleman). The girl is able to convince him to come along as a chaperone on the school trip to Venice. And there they both get caught in the middle of a plan by internationally operating terrorists who target JJ’s boss David Kim (Ken Jeong) and his son Collin, who is Sophie’s best friend.
“MY SPY 2: THE ETERNAL CITY” STARRING ANNA FARIS ALONGSIDE DAVE BAUTISTA
In addition to Bautista, Coleman and Jeon, Kristen Schaal also returns as JJ’s rather nerdy, much more tech-savvy colleague Bobbi. The quartet is joined by several new stars – most notably Anna Faris. It is not yet known which role the actress, known among others from “Scary Movie” and the sitcom “Mom”, will take on. But since the announcement says that there will be “a dynamic story with twists and funny performances as well as a little romance”, we can very well imagine that she will embody a love interest for JJ (Sophie’s teacher?);
In addition, Craig Robinson (“Brooklyn Nine-Nine”) and the German star Flula Borg, known from “The Suicide Squad” and “Pitch Perfect 2”, among others, have already been confirmed for the cast. As with the predecessor, the director is Peter Segal (“Manhattan Queen”, “Get Smart”). Filming is just starting, so a release on Amazon Prime Video could even take place at the end of 2023, but more likely in spring 2024.
