Although it was one of the horror surprises of 2021 for us, “Freaky” only made it into the top 100 of the local cinema annual charts by the skin of its teeth. Now you can catch up on the entertaining slasher fun with your Prime subscription.
“Saw: Spiral”, “Malignant”, “Army Of The Dead” – yes, the 2021 film year brought forth a number of horror films that surprised, thrilled or disappointed and provided plenty to talk about. One of the genre highlights, however, was criminally neglected: only 36,144 tickets were sold for “Freaky” in Germany, which meant only 92nd place (!) in the local cinema charts at the end of the year. Slasher fans who missed the film at the cinema would do well to catch up with it now at the latest.
For us, the equally fun and bloodthirsty body-swapping horror thoroughly thrilled. Fans of both classic body-swap comedies à la “Freaky Friday” and traditional slashers like “Friday the 13th” will get their money’s worth – and in the end will probably only be annoyed by the missed opportunity of the makers to simply call the film “Freaky Friday The 13th”…
“FREAKY”: BLUUTIG, WITZERFUL & SAUMÄSSIG UNTERHALTSA
Millie Kessler (Kathryn Newton) is about to become the next victim of the notorious serial killer known as the “Blissfield Butcher” (Vince Vaughn) – but then everything turns out differently: because instead of murder and manslaughter, a curse is suddenly triggered. And before the 17-year-old schoolgirl knows it, she herself is in the body of the brutal killer, while he has slipped into her body. And the worst thing about the whole thing: Millie only has 24 hours to reverse the body swap!
So she does everything she can to avoid being trapped in the giant’s body forever. The only problem is that her swap partner has no intention of returning to his old form. After all, he can now continue his bloody doings as an innocent teenager undetected…
Christopher Landon is a specialist for gruesome and bloody material, in which humour is not neglected. While his most recent film “We Have A Ghost” has been available exclusively on Netflix for a few days, he has already proven this with the fun zombie apocalypse “Scouts Vs. Zombies” and of course with the time-loop horror hits “Happy Deathday” and “Happy Deathday 2U”. In our opinion, however, his best film to date is “Freaky”.
The FILMSTARTS review gave the “surprisingly violent and superbly cast” body-swapping horror comedy with a “brilliant premise” a strong 4 out of 5 possible stars. Apart from comedy ace Vince Vaughn (“The Wedding Crashers”), we were also particularly impressed by Kathryn Newton, who is not only incredibly cool and sexy after the body swap, but also creates a tremendously threatening intensity. So if you want to see a different side of the young actress currently appearing in Marvel’s “Ant-Man And The Wasp: Quantumania”, this is your chance!
