“Game Of Thrones” fans with a weakness for drastic deaths, deceitful intrigues & permissive love affairs now get all that with an extra portion of brute action – and completely free of charge. With “Spartacus”, available today on Freevee.

“Spartacus” is FSK-18 entertainment par excellence. Because the fictional life story of the gladiator Spartacus is not only incredibly entertaining, but does not do things by halves in terms of both violence and sex – and is thus clearly aimed at adult audiences. Anything else would be inconsistent anyway, since the series is set at the time of the great slave uprising in the Roman Empire, during which things were certainly not squeamish.

Fans of revealing, bloody and historically tinged entertainment who have missed the series so far or only followed it in extracts when it was on TV now have every reason to rejoice. Spartacus” is now available completely free of charge on Amazon Freevee – the ad-financed free alternative to Amazon Prime Video.

The series, which was produced from 2010 to 2013, found its way to Germany via RTL Crime and finally celebrated its free-TV premiere on ProSieben in 2012. There, “Spartacus” was given an evening slot, which gave the bloody historical action format additional exposure and popularity. However, some of the episodes, which were released for 18-year-olds, had to be shortened for broadcast at the time.

Freevee now offers the 18-rated version of the series, which is one of the most popular of the 2010s. At least according to IMDb: in the ultimate ranking of the best series of all time, “Spartacus” is ranked 203rd, ahead of hits like “Doctor Who”, “Sons Of Anarchy” and “Shameless”.

“SPARTACUS”: LOVE, WAR, BETRAYAL – AND LOTS OF ACTION!

“Smallville”-, “Buffy”- and “Angel: Slayer of the Dark”-author Steven S. DeKnight dedicated “Spartacus” to the story of the legendary Thracian gladiator – who really existed. Nevertheless, you should not expect a 1:1 narration of his actual life, but for the most part pure fiction. However, this does not detract from the immense entertainment value of the series:

Stylistically swimming on the wave of Zack Snyder’s “300”, which was released a few years earlier, the action is the showpiece of the series: the action is as spectacular as it is bloody in super-slow motion. Fans of almost comically exaggerated orgies of butchery are served here with rows and rows of spectacular fight choreographies that also make Gorehound hearts beat faster.

In addition, “Spartacus” tells a gripping story characterised by lies, intrigue and betrayal that does not shy away from drastic deaths or surprising twists – and can thus also be seen as an alternative for “Game Of Thrones” fans, among others.

In the first season of “Blood And Sand” you can expect Welshman Andy Whitfield in the title role. After his death in 2011, Australian Liam McIntyre took over the part in seasons 2 (“Vengeance”) and 3 (“War Of The Damned”).
